On Sunday, my family and I were packed for vacation as we watched the morning news of Tropical Storm Debby. One of the paths was exactly where we were going, but the others were different scenerios. We, like many of you, don't have many vacations a year so each one is an important family time planned around our budget and timed with our jobs.
As we continued driving south toward Alabama, we listened to the weather news still very unsure about the path of the storm. On Sunday evening, I rushed to the beach with the ominous clouds and dangerous waves and said, "Let's sit out now because we may have a week of rain." However when we awoke on Monday morning, we saw that the track of the storm shifted and moved toward the northern parts of Florida dumping huge amounts of rain.
When I began to ponder our choice to drive toward the storm, Jesus reminded me of the verse from John 16:33 which says,
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Many times in our lives, we take the easy, sunny road in our lives. Paths we know will take us to happy places. But then there are other times when we are uncertain about our travels: times when the clouds look dark and scary. Situations when we have to hunker down and pray about what to do next. Circumstances when we wonder if life is going to dump a foot of rain on us. These are the critical times when we need to trust Jesus's heart when we can't see His hand. We have to rely on God's Holy Word and Jesus's promise that He has overcome any tribulation we will face in this world. Jesus told us these things so that we may experience His peace no matter how big the storm.
My Prayer: God, thank you for your Word which showers us with peace when life's storms are brewing. Holy Spirit, remind me to abide in the peace that transcends all understanding. I pray for those people who are in their darkest part of the storms of life. Extend your mercy and grace like an umbrella over them today. Remind them that they are not alone, but that You have overcome the world. In Jesus name!
