Food buying should not complicated. And really the truth is that it's either pure, real food or it's processed-in-a-factory food.
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.—Genesis 1:29
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.—Genesis 9:3
i truly believe that if the food isn't a living animal or plant and it doesn't decompose it is not meant for consumption. It is impossible to maintain good, vibrant health while eating factory-made food. God designed our bodies to eat foods that are pure and from the earth, not chemically treated, GMO (genetically modified), processed foods.
So why all the chemicals, preservatives, genetically modified ingredients?
Convenience. People want convenience. Supply meets demand. People are busy and they want easy, so the supply meets that demand. i was once guilty of over-scheduling myself and looking for ways to save time. Eating boxed meals was a great way (good idea at the time) to save time and $$. And, the food never went bad, so the shelf-life was an added bonus. But what i didn't realize is that—in order to make these foods convenient, fast, and easy—there's a high price to pay eventually for taking the easy & convenient road. All those chemicals to preserve the food accumulate in the body over time. All the extra sodium and sugar contribute to weight gain. Trans fats ... cholesterol (not the good kind!) ... empty calories. And we call this food?
This week, i challenge you to read through every label of every product (food and beauty product) before you put it in your cart. If you don't know what the ingredient is or can't pronounce it, it doesn't belong in (or on) your body. Most people look at the top part of the food label and focus on calorie, fat, sodium, and maybe sugar content. The truth is that you really don't have to worry about fat, calories, etc when you purchase healthy foods!
But, when you only look at this part of the label, the product doesn't look so bad, other than low protein and high carbs. Where the focus needs to be is on the bottom of the label in the ingredients section. This label is from a very popular General Mills cereal. Ingredients are listed in order of highest content in food to lowest content. So, as you can see you are eating oats, a lot sugar, modified corn starch (which is probably GMO), and natural flavors. Healthy? i think not.
Next up, a popular "old fashioned bread". Pretty sure old fashioned would only include wheat, yeast, a liquid, and maybe a little sugar. This bread is straight out of a factory, not grandma's kitchen!
i don't even know where to start with this label. i make my own bread most of the time with flour, yeast, honey (sometimes), salt, water and maybe an egg and herbs. The rest of these ingredients are included to increase shelf life ... so that your "food" can be made, packaged, shipped, stocked, wait to be purchased, purchased, and then wait to be eaten. Bread made at home, naturally and with whole-food ingredients will go bad in a week, like it SHOULD.
So, my friends, what it comes down to is convenience. If you want to pay for cheap, convenient foods now, there will be a much higher price to pay later when the doctor can't figure out what disease you have or why you have chronic pain.
A lot of healing can happen by feeding your body pure and organic foods straight from the farm to your table. Or straight from your local grocer's produce section to your table. God put all this good food on earth to enjoy and people are addicted to the factory-produced food so much that they think natural foods are disgusting without loads of sugar and salt.
It's time to stop sacrificing the health of your body for convenience. Vow to not spend a dollar on food that is foreign to the body — remember that supply meets demand. If you want healthy, organic and unprocessed foods, you must demand it with your dollar.
Eating healthy and unmodified foods is crucial for healing the entire body, inside and out. i know that it takes longer to prepare homemade fresh meals, but we'll talk about ways to save time this week on our facebook page. Be sure to make your next grocery trip when you are not pressed for time so that you can read every label. Your entire body will thank you for your good choices.
Father God, please forgive me for putting junk in my body. You have given me an abundance of healthy food options and i don't make good decisions. i know you want to see me well and vibrant and i know i can't be healthy if i continue to eat the same processed foods i've been eating. Please open my eyes, Lord, and reveal to me what is pure. Show me ways to save time and money while glorifying you with my food choices.
