Can we all agree that we've experience some sort of spiritual battle this week? For me, it was more than one.
Do you ever say to God, in the midst of a spiritual battle, why me? Save me, Lord! Come to my rescue!
Why does this have to be so hard?
Often, i've learned that spiritual battles are so hard on me because one, i don't know God's Word like i should and two, i don't know how to use it as a weapon against the devil. You see, in order to fight our spiritual battles, you have to know Truth. The devil can't get very far if you know Truth because you can't be tempted, deceived, or manipulated very easily. And, honestly, sometimes i believe that God lets you and i be tempted, deceived, and manipulated to show us why we need to know God's Word and draw us closer to Himself. Because, you know, the devil knows God's word, too ... and he is good about twisting it just enough to make you think it's truth.
On the days that you are hard pressed on every side (and even on the good days) you need to know how to use the tools God has given us to be able to stand firm in truth and against the devils schemes. These tools need to be written on your heart, so that you can put on the full armor of God every morning. Because the moment you step out of bed, you can be sure the devil is looking for ways to mess up your day. Getting in the habit of waking up, thanking God for a brand new day, and putting on your armor is your best defense.
Now, does putting on the armor of God mean that your days will now be trouble free? No. What it means is that when trouble strikes you know God is there with you, that you are protected by Him, that truth will prevent temptation, deception, and manipulation, and that you can rest in knowing God's in control.
Write this scripture on a notecard and carry it with you everywhere you go until you have it memorized.
Therefore put on the full armor of God,so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.—Ephesians 6:13-17
Take up that sword of the Holy Spirit and shield of faith with confidence. This armor protects every area of your life, the things you've worked really hard for. A good marriage. Obedient children, A steady job. Good health.... Do not leave any area of your life vulnerable!
My favorite way to dress in armor every day is to sit quietly in prayer, asking the Lord to send His mighty angels to help me put on each piece. And as i visualize being clothed, i deeply think about what each of those pieces mean. i can't even begin to tell you what peace that brings.
So, even though this week has ended, don't stop putting on the armor of God every morning. Our goal is to do it day after day for 52 weeks to see how it changes our lives. Keep forgiving yourself for falling short of your own (and others) expectations and keep up with the sugar detox. Join in the Facebook conversation here.
Mighty God, thank you for giving me armor that i can clothe myself in daily to protect me from evil in all areas of my life. Please help keep this scripture on the front of my mind when i wake up in the morning. i do not want to leave my home without being prepared for the challenges of the day. In Jesus mighty name.
