A year ago this month, I took a life changing nutrition course offered by my chiropractor. I knew I needed to make some changes with my diet and didn't have any idea where to start. As I began learning about labels and chemicals that are added to food, I asked the Lord to change my desires to glorify my body and Him.
I believe we should not approach this lifestyle based on legalism and judgement, but simply rooted in the fact that we want to be as healthy as we can be for as long as we are living. I want to enjoy my children and their children and, perhaps, their children-Lord willing.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 says,
"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you and life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life..."
I especially love the part that says, "Now choose life." Life is about choices we make and nutrition is part of those decisions.
Are there times when I splurge and have an ice cream or pizza? Yes, you bet! But I don't eat them every day or even every week. I limit the amount of chemicals and processed foods I put into my body. I spend more time making food than grabbing quick food. I make conscious decisions to choose life.
This year I set a goal for myself to be in better shape: nutritionally and physically. When I read this quote by Zig Ziglar, “The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now," I decided that it was crucial for me to keep what I want most in front of me to achieve my goal.
If you are stuck on this journey, I encourage you to pray about what changes the Lord would have you to make in order to choose life. It is His Will for you.
My prayer: God, thank you for reminding me to choose life. Help me remember how to do that every day with the choices I make about nutrition and exercise. Holy Spirit, remind me and help me have self control on this journey. In Jesus name!
