i started gardening about 3 years ago and have been hooked ever since. i did not have a green thumb and i wasn't successful with everything i planted my first year, but i learned a lot from my experience, successes and failures. There is nothing more rewarding that picking fresh lettuce for a dinner salad, fresh herbs for soups and other dishes, tomatoes for homemade pasta sauce and salsa, etc. It's really hard to go back to store-bought food after tasting goodness straight from the dirt to the table.
Don't worry, i am not asking you start an entire garden full of food. It's going to be a simple challenge this week. Pick one herb or vegetable to grow from seed (here are some easy choices), pick up some organic seed starting dirt at Home Depot, Lowes, or other store, some organic seeds, pick a sunny window sill, and let's get growing.
If you're interested in growing a larger scale square-foot garden, check out this awesome site. It is a free online tool that helps you plan out your garden.
No yard? No worries. You can grow your herbs and most vegetables in containers on a balcony. Too intimidated to start from seed? OK, seek out a local nursery who grows organically and pick up an organic herb or vegetable plant.
Stay connected on Facebook this week for more resources, ideas, and tips.
It's also that time of year to buy into a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). You can go here to search for one in your area. They are very affordable and you get fresh produce straight from the farm every week. Buying local supports farmers and is healthier because you get fresher foods that don't have to be picked, boxed, shipped, stocked, and sold all before you get to eat it.
Lord, i desire to learn how to grow organic, delicious food in my own backyard. Bless me with extra patience as i learn and bless what i grow, in Jesus name.
