Springtime often finds me at a hurried pace with the demands of teaching and driving my kids to all of their activities. This lifestyle if not kept in check can lead to exhaustion and even sickness.
Jesus says in John 15:4,
"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."
In other words, we need to hold onto Jesus for dear life though this roller coaster ride of life. Our relationship with Him is the key to our peace.
For my spiritual "rest," I challenge myself to spend some quality time with the Lord every morning and evening. I try to sanctify that time by not checking email and simply abiding in the flow of the Holy Spirit. If it is a morning where I struggle to find my focus due to the demands of my day, I simply ask the Lord to help me find my still place with Him.
As far as physical rest goes, it is crucial that we realize we only have twenty four hours a day. Setting appropriate boundaries and prioritizing responsibilities are key. One personal boundary I have set is that I shut down my computer and grading around eight o'clock in the evening. Usually I take a warm bath and relax before going to bed. It is absolutely necessary that I go to bed before ten, and knowing this about myself helps me attain the much needed sleep that my body requires.
One important idea that we must battle is that we are being selfish if we carve out times of rest for our bodies and souls. Instead of giving in to the lie that we are expected to be available or superhuman, we have to fight for this precious, needed time so that our bodies and minds can rejuvenate and heal.
This week our challenge is to take a look at our daily lives. Where can we find time to abide in our Heavenly Father? Where can we find times to take care of our bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit? I believe if we are willing to look, the Holy Spirit wants to reveal these precious life saving truths.
My Prayer: God, thank you for reminding me the importance of resting. Show me ways to spend precious time abiding in you. Holy Spirit, allow me the words and wisdom in setting proper, healing boundaries for my body regarding sleep. Thank you Father for your continued grace when I push my limits by giving in to the demands of a busy life. In Jesus Name!
