Exercise is an important part of getting healthy and maintaining good health.
But, i'm going to let you in on a little secret about exercise. It doesn't have to be high impact or several hours a week if you eat well, get good rest, keep stress levels low, and avoid putting toxins in your body. Good news, right?
i love what 1 Timothy 4:8 says:
"Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come."
What this says to me is that yes, exercise is beneficial, but it doesn't need to take priority in our lives. That being said, i also believe it doesn't mean we should be unhealthy. As Christians, we must make our spiritual health the priority, but we should also take the necessary steps to be healthy without having to make exercise an escape plan for making poor food and lifestyle choices.
Doing these three things will help keep you healthy and help you find balance with exercising without having to overdo it:
1. eat healthy - avoid processed foods and sugar, and eat a balanced diet
2. sleep 7-8 hours per night
3. get a handle on your stress levels
The type of exercise you need depends on your body type and physical needs. There's not one workout that works for everyone. Exercise requires that you listen to your body. Maybe it needs a good sweat (Zumba, Jazzercise, or a good run). A good stretch (Yoga or Pilates). Strength training (lifting weights). Stress relief (a nice, relaxing walk or some boxing). Or, a combination of some of these. Whatever type of exercise your body needs, the important thing is that you MOVE without putting strain on your body.
i don't know about you, but i sit at a desk for 40 hours a week. i have to remind myself to get up often, even going for a short walk in the parking lot to re-energize my body when it starts to feel sluggish from sitting all day. i noticed my posture was getting whacky from sitting at a desk, so i recently started doing pilates to help stretch out my body and correct my posture. i cannot do high-impact exercise or running because i'm recovering from adrenal fatigue. So pilates and walking a few times per day is what my body needs to stay healthy.
You know your body best. Figure out what kind of movement it needs and get moving. The goal for this week is to get 20-30 minutes of movement/exercise a day. Go for a walk, a bike ride, or take a stroll during work tEven if you break the time up, make sure you are moving for at least 20-30 minutes a day. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.
So how are you going to get moving this week? Make a plan and get to it! Your health depends on it.
Lord, thank you for the ability to move. i pray i don't ever take it for granted. i vow today to start taking care of my body by committing to 20-30 minutes of exercise per day, no matter how low- or high-impact the exercise is. In Jesus name.
