"Imagine you leave one job for another, and your former boss demands that you come in to work today. Of course, you'd decline because you no longer work there! You have a new job . Similiarly, we are no longer slaves to sin but slaves to righteousness. When sin demands we come in for work, we now have the right and poer to say, "NO!"
~Lecrae., Lord Have Mercy devotional on The Overflow Devo
Lecrae is a Christian rapper and I workout to a lot of his music. I saw he had a devotional on the YouVersion bible app and thought I'd follow it. It is only seven days. On day three he makes the above statement about sin.
It impressed on me the ridiculousness of a believer giving into sin.
Roman 6:20 NLT
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right.
In other words, you didn't let doing what was right mess with your primary function...sinning. You didn't "have" to do right becuase sin was the main driver of your life. The only thing you "had" to do was sin. But when you become a Christian, Christ is the main driver of your life and you get to choose to do what is right.
Roman 6:22 NLT
But now you are free from the power of sine and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result n eternal life.
I love this mental picture. It is ridiculous for a former employee to go to work at his old job when he is employeed somewhere else. Think about this mental picture the next time you feel sin calling you demanding you show up for work. You don't work there any more. You are a new creation with a new boss. So you can emphatically say NO to sin!
God, I thank you that the blood of Jesus freed us from the power sin had over us. It is no longer our ruler. It is no longer our master. Righteousness is our new lord. Show us what is right. Help us choose what is right and to tell sin... NO!
