God clearly commands in Scripture that we are to only serve Him and have no other gods before Him. Obviously most of us do not have statues or shrines erected in our yards, but clearly our challenge is more difficult to define. What are the other "gods" that distract us from our relationship with God?
As a working mother and wife, I often find that my "gods" are good things: children, serving, teaching. Although these things are worthy, they become an idol when I am distracted by them. It's very difficult to balance everything!
The key here is to ask the Lord to prioritize our steps each day. We don't have to work to show God how much we love Him, but it delights Him when we have a relationship with Him. For me, I wake up about fifteen minutes earlier than everyone else and spend time reading my devotion and praying. This gets my day off with the most important One at the top of my list: the Lord. The other habit we have is to listen to Christian music on the way to school which creates an atmosphere of worship in our car (and hearts). The last important thing I do is pray every night before bed both with my kids and alone. This helps me refocus my thoughts and settles my mind.
Committed Christians can balance the "gods" of our society with the help from God, self control, and good habits. This year our goal is to go deeper with the Lord and become healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Increasing our conversation with the God of the universe promotes healing and peace.
My Prayer: God, thank you for reminding us of the importance of putting you first. Show us how to balance the gods of our lives with our relationship with you. As we spend more time with you, Father, change our hearts and help us to shine like starts in the universe to those around us. In Jesus' name we pray!
